Kid’s Jam: what is it ?
The principle is to make kids love and have fun with music, so that motivation is highest for learning to play an instrument more thoroughly. The sessions aims for the kids to get familiar with the instruments and music in a playful way, enjoying the playing together as a group.
Kids have a natural gift for recognizing good harmonies, and actually appreciate good music, even if in many cases they are unable to play. Traditional music learning is often very hard to start with, as the necessary physical and mental training is very stressful. Furthermore, the initial results in terms of sounds produced, are often quite deceiving, which is especially true for un-tuned instruments like the violin for instance. Most musical training starts off with solo playing, resulting in difficulties when there is a need to play together.
The Kid’s Jam concept is to take a radically opposite way, by first giving to Kids simple instruments which will generate tuned and rich sounds via direct and simple usage. The session is therefore focused on percussions, or tuned instruments: different kind of bells and drums, simple, ready-tuned ukuleles and small guitars.
The kids first learn to play in unison and sequence, and finally they come to make a “song” of their creation. And they can bring the song back home to share with others…
The target is to welcome kids from age 7 to 11, who are about to start, or have just started, to play music.
We plan first session on 4th of December, another one in January. We advice to have the kids follow two sessions, so that their “songs” get clearly refined…
To simplify, we rule out too complex, or too fragile instruments, like violins, electric keyboards, concert flute, full size guitars and so on. Harmonicas and flutes could be included if the kids already have some basic experience. For hygienic reasons wind instruments will not be focused on as they should not be exchanged.
During the session, the kids will be given an explanation, a demonstration, an opportunity to try all basic instruments, and learn how to create sounds out of them. Then, according to what they prefer, or what they are best at (or both!) we distribute the instruments to the group, and start each kid playing sequentially, on the time indication of the facilitator. This process itself teaches them to pay attention to each other, stay alert, be sensitive and responsive to the rhythm order. Progressively the process becomes more complicated and challenging by playing in random order given by the facilitator. This is to train them to be focused on the “Orchestra Chief”.
Eventually we dive into the Jam so to speak: the facilitator gives a theme using a guitar or drums and the kids respond one by one to the theme, each with a kind of “ solo” rhythm; a chance for them to be creative and discover their independent styles. Afterwards we define a sequence of instruments in line with the theme, and we produce “ our music”. This last session will be recorded, so that they can proudly bring this and present it back home!
Sessions can be restarted numerous times, with a change of instruments, and an increased complexity of varying themes. In other words, it is always creative and never the same!
